As part of this lesson the kids learned about the rules that artists use to compose pictures. These rules are called the "principles of design". Some of the principles of design are that diagonal lines create movement, while horizontal lines can make a picture feel calm. Colors also convey emotion. Black can create a sense of fear, red draws attention, white conveys purity and green can create a sense of home.
The kids took all of these ideas and then illustrated a scene where a princess is being attacked by birds. The princess needs to appear vulnerable and afraid. The birds need to appear dangerous and scary. The goal for the kids was to use the principles of design to convey these emotions.
