Realistic Tree Paintings - and bifurcating, tapering tree drawings

Before we started this lesson I had kids draw trees. There were many lollipop and triangle trees. Then I had them learn to draw trees by looking at trees that artists had drawn and painted.
Trees in the summer had different values of color on the leaves and trunks. I taught the kids about shading from light to dark.
Trees in the winter reveal their structure. The branches grow out from the trunk and bifurcate as the tree spreads out and grows leaves to collect the sunlight. The branches farthest away from the trunk are the thinnest as they taper to a point.

You can really see the different values of shading on the tree trunks in this picture, next comes the values added to the foilage.

This tree drawing is a wonderfule example of how a tree's bifurcating structure looks in the winter.
