These wolf drawings look very realistic because the kids used crayon strokes to mimic the way fur appears on a wolf. When kids use a coloring book, they are just filling in an area with color. In my art class tthe kids learn to use brushes and crayons to make strokes and marks to represent parts of an image. That's a mark making process that is entirely different than just coloring something in with a crayon. To begin the lesson I read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Sciezka to my classes. We also looked at photographs of wolves in nature on the television monitor for inspiration and to observe the colors of their fur. Kids also created clay relief wolf sculptures. We normally work back and forth between two dimensional paintings and drawings and three dimensional clay sculptures.
