Aztec Sun Stone Sculptures and Paintings

This lesson is about radiating patterns. The Aztec calendar stone is arranged in rings. As part of this lesson kids use clay bisque stamps to create radiating patterns in a circular clay slab. In the center of their clay sun stone, they create a face.

During the painting part of this assignment kids create a stylized, patterned sun painting. They use tempera paints in warm colors and paint on a square sheet of colored construction paper. We use plastic lids from coffee cans and butter containers to create the radiating rings before the kids begin painting.

This lesson is appropriate for students in grades 3 and up.
