About Me

I'm an elementary art teacher. I teach 31 classes a week and have over 800 students. (That's a lot of kids. It boggles my mind too.)

I love the marks elementary kids make when they work. Their work is always fresh and full of life. I have taught art at every level K-12, but I prefer the young kids. Their energy and enthusiasm is great. Plus they work so loosely that it is inspiring.

When I'm on break from school I work in my studio. I'd like to be out there more, but teaching is really a full time commitment. When I graduated from college I wanted to be a studio artist. But I have a few health issues (I have had diabetes for over 30 years) so I decided that a full time job with benefits was what I needed. The rewards of teaching have been so much more than I expected. So what started out as a safety net with a salary and benefits has turned into a fulfilling career. Of course I wish there was a little more balance in my schedule. A little less teaching time and a little more studio time would be great, of course that's what makes summer so special.

If you have questions about why your iron red glazes didn't work out, I have a series of things you can try on my firing schedule page. I listed all I know about getting iron reds to work in electric kilns on that page.

There's some work involved in dialing in your firing schedule and the glaze. There's no single magic trick I can tell you. Iron red glazes do not travel well and you have to calibrate your kiln and your glaze to achieve success.
